  • Marigold stems damaged overnight

My poor marigolds are being destroyed. Something is causing little holes and scratches in the stem. Only in the inch of stem immediately above the soil. I have never seen it before. It is almost like a beaver gnawing off a log. Does anyone know what is doing this?

Hi could well be earwigs ,i`ve had a few stems gnawed off my tall african marigolds this year too and have noticed the odd one on the stems early morning . Try tying a small plant pot upside down stuffed with newspaper next to the stem, they will shelter (hopefully )in there . This is an old trick often used by Dahlia growers too .
